PowWeb - Editor Review

PowWeb

The Good: PowWeb boasts a nice support structure that includes tool-free phone support, 24/7 chat support, knowledge base, FAQ and extensive community forum. Its infrastructure runs over a solid Unix platform providing a stable file system located on load balanced servers; Has interesting capabilities like daily auto-backup, unlimited domain hosting and SSL. PowWeb hosting single-tier plan also features easy setup for his new web masters.

The Bad: PowWeb has reliability issues that includes downtimes and slow MySQL, also there is no 99% uptime guarantee; its OPS Control Panel is a bit difficulty to navigate; Email support sometimes provide delayed answers and in some cases customer queries are just ignored.

The Bottom Line: PowWeb is a well-structured company that offers web hosting services since 1999. Has an amazing range of customer support options backed up by a big community forum; And it is a very good price option ($5.77/mo) for web masters that will not host a large portal as its MySQL is a bit slow in some cases.

It's tempting to call PowWeb yet another simple 1-tier plan hosting company around there. After all, there are hundreds of hosting companies that have made attempts at the single plan model, and PowWeb looks dangerously similar. But call PowWeb just another hosting company in the market would be a disservice, as it is so much more than that. PowWeb is one of the few hosting companies that provides auto-backups, easy setup, SSL, a complete support forum, load balanced servers, top disk space (999999 GB) and bandwidth (999999 GB) for a low price ($5.77/mo). Again, we have some complaints regarding reliability and delays in support staff to answer emails, but for non big portals that use huge database access, PowWeb is a solid choice again due its low price.

We tested PowWeb performance using a PHP and MySQL site. We noticed that MySQL is a bit slow, and some web masters reported the same, but this didn't impede the site to work. However we wouldn't mind if PowWeb had a 99% Uptime guarantee like all his competitors does. In terms of general performance, PowWeb hosting was fairly sluggish. There was a delay in response from ftp while trying to upload out test site and load the pages while visiting them. All in all it is just a matter of waiting a few seconds, but it is long enough to be noticeable by web site visitors and a bit annoying. By the way Web browsing experience was good, as pages loaded without any error.

We also already told that we are not a fan of custom control Panels? PowWeb uses a custom control panel called OPS. PowWeb OPS has limited navigation as is a bit hard to find where is located the feature you want. But the PowWeb OPS control panel offers a full range of functionality including DNS Management, Web-Based File Manager, Custom Error Pages, Script Instant Installer (that PowWeb claims to be better than the known Fantastico!) and auto daily backups. Auto daily backup is especially welcome, and a feature that's absent on far too many hosting providers. On email department, you can also use unlimited POP3/IMAP & SMTP, but you don't get an auto responder service--another item that's not necessary for most web masters but would be nice to have.

We also tested PowWeb customer support infrastructure. Response quality was good for the most part, but it wasn't fast enough. Though we got correct answers, some emails took days to get a simple acknowledgment, what made us to consider looking for answers from other users on PowWeb community forums, where we surprised found complaints about ignored emails by PowWeb customer support. But we didn't find the same issues when using toll-free phone support (that is not 24/7). The overall support wasn't so bad as we could find answers also from 24/7 chat support, but it just could be better from a support base that includes tool-free, 24/7 chat support, knowledge base, FAQ and community forums.

Nice Hosting

Rating 9 out of 10

Recommends: Yes

Pros: Nice bandwidth, nice diskspace and nice support

Cons: few downtimes on beginning.

We've hosted at Powweb for 14 months until now. The plan is very attractive: huge bandwidth, hosting space and a lot of good reviews. We had no problem during migration, I could setup my site on just a few hours. We had a few downtimes on beginning, but now everything is ok. The support is very friendly and looks like that they are not outsourced, but powweb staff. We do recommends Powweb. ~Ryan

best host for me and my customers

Rating 8 out of 10

Recommends: Yes

Pros: tons of features for the price and nice support

Cons: it would be great if they had a VPS or ded plan

I'm using Powweb for years and I highly recommend them as it has been an excellent experience for me and for my customers. They has an affordable $7.77 plan (that sometimes drop to $5.77 or something like that) and this is the only plan they have with a lot of features disk and transfer. Their customer service is outstanding and I (and my customers) never had a problem while dealing with their staff.

Nice Hosting, But not good for big traffic

Rating 7 out of 10

Recommends: Yes

Pros: Big Transfer and Disk space

Cons: do not support large traffic sites

I've been using Powweb for at least 18 months and everything was fine: they have a nice infrastructure, has a big disk space and a great bandwidth. But the problem is that my site got success and so their servers forced me to get out :-) but I still recommend powweb for hosting your php or static site. -- K
